The Nintendo Revolution Controller

Nintendo Revolution

Note: Please keep in mind that this page was originally written in 2004 as speculation, before any details about Nintendo's new controller had been released.

First off; This controller does not exist. Okay? It will still be quite a while before Nintendo reveals what their next generation controller will look like.

Taking a literal interpretation of what they said before the Nintendo DS was introduced, we might expect the Revolution controller to have a touch-screen on it but that would make a costly and unintuitive controller... Another interpretation would be that they mean to introduce a whole new way to control games.

The speculation is that there will be a motion sensor inside the controller. That a player could control the game simply by moving the controller through space - up/down, side-to-side, even tilting. Think of it as a more advanced form of Kirby's Tilt and Tumble.

A built-in microphone is probable too. Aside from that, we can expect some evolution to the traditional part of the controller - likely two thumb sticks, 4 face buttons, 2 triggers and hopefully two additional triggers to satisfy game developers. The Z button on the GameCube was difficult to press, so hopefully these new triggers would be intuitive. In my imaginary controller, these buttons actually push inwards instead of downwards like the usual triggers - this would allow a finger to use both triggers without having to shift position.
